2013 COA South Carolina Rally

November 5, 2013

The 2013 COA South Carolina rally was hosted by Marc Loibl and Sue Vaughn, President of the Low Country Loafers at Palmetto Cove, South Carolina, on October 31st thru November 3rd. Thirty Coachmen members participated in the rally and represented the states of Ohio, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina.

The rally kicked off with a penne pasta and meatball supper prepared by Sue Vaughn followed by a dress-up contest. The participants’ costumes represented one of their favorite songs from the 40s, 50s, or 60s and the group was asked to identify the song. It was readily apparent that a lot of imagination went into the costumes and the competition was great fun. In keeping with the “oldies” theme, next came “Name the Tune”. Exerts of seventeen oldies were played and the teams were asked to identify the song and the artist. Even though some people claimed that some of the songs never existed (the host knew all of them!), most songs and artists were identified and resulted in more laughs and fun. The evening was completed with joker boards and nickel-knock games and great companionship.

Friday started off with rain and clouds, but the bean bag baseball was moved inside of the activity hall and the competition was intense, but friendly. Three teams competed for the championship, but the Red Sox, captained by Ron Gehrts, blew the Blue Sox and Green Hornets away. There were not enough fingers and toes to count the runs that the Red Sox racked up. After lunch, the weather cleared and the sun provided a perfect afternoon for ladder golf. Again the fellowship was great and the competition intense. Nine teams were in the running, but Wayne Mathews and Jonny Reed prevailed for 1st place followed by Noel Roper and Louis Bauerlein for 2nd. All of the fun worked up great appetites, so everyone was ready for baked ham and pot luck dishes. The evening meal was splendid due to the culinary talents of everyone and no one left hungry. The day was completed with the Joker tournament with nine teams determined to win the championship. Again, the competition was fierce and the fellowship warm with Cheryl Thomas and Rick Stone winning the tournament. Stan Wildermuth and John Stevenson claimed second place.

Saturday morning started with Kara Forward coordinating a breakfast extraordinaire. Sausage, bacon, ham, pancakes, grits, hashbrowns, fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea were provided in abundance and everyone was set for a free day of exploring or just enjoying the beautiful scenery of Palmetto Cove. The evening meal stayed with the “oldies” theme of the rally and old fashioned hamburgers and hot dogs with all of the fixings along with side dishes and desserts too many to sample were provided. After dinner, our very own poet laureate, Ed Chaplin, captured the activities of the rally in a very thoughtful poem that everyone loved. Next, the winners of the games were recognized and the door prizes acquired by Rick Stone were awarded.

Sunday morning came too quickly. A continental breakfast was ready for the group and then closing remarks were provided by Marc Loibl.

As always, the rally passed too quickly, but each day was filled with fun and the best fellowship to be found anywhere. The rally was a great success due to the teamwork of Chapter 193 and the enthusiasm of the attendees. The Low Country Loafers would like to express their sincere appreciation for everyone’s participation and we’re looking forward to our next rally and to being with everyone again.

Thank You!!
